Welcome to the Christmas clickhole!

20th December, 2017

A lot of people will be reading books and watching movies to glean wisdom and gain inspiration for the new year, but honestly, who has time for that?

If you’re anything like me, a large part of Christmas will be spent on the couch with an iPad, going down a YouTube clickhole it will take you days to get out of.

YouTube’s algorithms have made it easier to get lost in a rabbit hole of content. Just follow a string and see how it connects with the next thing…and the next thing…and the next thing…

In the span of a few hours, I can go from looking at a live performance of Take Five to a slow-mo video of a man jumping onto a trampoline lined with 1000 mousetraps.

(Damned if I know how I got from A to Z on that one, but it’s an enjoyable journey all the less. Probably not that productive, though.)

So is there a way to while away hours on the couch while actually doing something useful you can bring with you into next year?

We’re glad you asked!

Lessons from Akio Morita

Presented by Evan Carmichael, this video gives you a quick rundown of the key business lessons you can take from the life and times of Akio Morita.

For those of you unfamiliar with the man, he’s the bloke who started tech behemoth Sony and led it through several game-changing moments.

From the decision to change the name and focus of the company, to the development of the Walkman (against advice), this straight-forward video has some great gems for budding entrepreneurs to keep in mind.

Steve Jobs at Stanford

An oldie but a goodie, this video is of Steve Jobs’ commencement speech at Stanford.

It touches on his life, his decision to drop out of college because it was pretty much useless (a pretty brave move given the audience) and his description of death itself as the greatest change agent the world has ever seen.

It’s a showcase of different thinking from a man who played a pivotal role in the development of Apple from a PC company into a tech behemoth.

SheStarts: episode one

This one is a bit of a clickhole in itself – as it follows the startup journey of 11 budding entrepreneurs as they get advice from all over the startup ecosystem (and even some from MYOB).

It shows the startup journey like no other series really has attempted. You could follow, week by week the pivots and re-pivots, the struggles to communicate a company strategy and the building of an actual working MVP.

We all know this stuff happens on a weekly basis in startup land – but nobody had documented it quite like this before.

Oh, and it’s all about changing perceptions about women in tech startup land too.

Margaret Neale on negotiation

Margaret Neale is seen as the guru of negotiation (sorry Donald).

Stats show that more people look to start new jobs and negotiate a better deal for themselves when the new year rolls around as resolutions are fresh in the memory bank.

Neale has done extensive research on negotiation and the art of the deal at Stanford University, and here she lets you in on the secret of getting what you want using real-world examples.

Every TED talk ever

Ever wanted to give a TEDx talk?

This video is basically a step-by-step guide to giving every TED talk ever: including giant pictures of the earth for no reason whatsoever and detailed instruction about what to do with your hands while you’re shifting paradigms and other stuff thought leaders do.
