MYOB congratulates Chippendale sisters Hayley and Lauri Smith of fashion label Serpent & the Swan for winning the third of five ‘Big Heroes Shop Small’ business makeover grants worth $10,000 each.
Since launching in 2009, Serpent & the Swan has been building an enviable reputation creating unique, locally made women’s, men’s and unisex collections and accessories, with the label inspired by the sister’s shared childhood love of the animal kingdom.
Hayley Smith said, “We had enough of working for other people and we’re both creative and wanted to do something different. I was working for a big label and Lauri was working for a post-production company. So we gave up our full-time jobs and took the leap. We attended the Shop Small talk in Sydney, looked at the Shop Small website and entered the MYOB competition. It’s amazing to have won!”
The caption for their winning entry in the MYOB ‘Business Selfie’ photo competition, Hayley and Lauri said, “We LOVE what we do every day! $10K would give us the opportunity to showcase our work at Fashion Week 2014 and share our PASSION with the world!”
When asked about the biggest challenges in business, the sisters said, “Financial management is the hardest bit by a long shot, especially in the beginning where we started without money and with no investors. MYOB helps us a lot with organising our finances.”
A significant business highlight for the sisters was participating in “G’day USA”, an annual program to showcase Australian business, which took them to New York to showcase their line. Hayley’s and Lauri’s advice to small business owners is, “Be tenacious and just keep going. Follow your intuition, trust yourself and don’t listen to others’ negativity.”
