Back on the floor: how Garfish Manly got out of the office

Open the door to family-owned restaurant Garfish Manly, and the only things that rival the view are the restaurant’s high-quality seafood menu and expert wait staff.

Much has changed since opening in 2006, shifting from blackboard menus and paper diaries to what Garfish owner Danen Young calls a “grown-up business”.

“When I first started, everything was all over the place,” says Danen. “It just felt all a bit higgledy-piggledy.”

When Danen took over in 2022, he went looking for software that would deliver the automation and organisation the team needed to refocus on customer experience. What he found was MYOB AccountRight Plus and he hasn’t looked back since.

Disconnection chaos

Before upgrading to MYOB AccountRight Plus, the business made do with multiple disconnected systems. That meant double (or even triple) handling data, which wasn’t just time-consuming, it also increased the chance of error.

“We wouldn’t have the secure knowledge that all our bills were correct, and everything was properly reconciled,” says Kristen. “That’s a real risk at the end of the quarter when paying tax.”

To access the mission-critical reporting and insight, Danen needed to dig through different systems to collate and double check numbers.

“For what should be a two-minute task, I’d spend 10 minutes just trying to find the right invoice,” he says.

All that extra admin took them away from their core focus: supporting their team and taking care of customers.

“It’s a lot of desk work,” says Danen. “I was like, ‘There’s surely a better way.’”

The team says that while they considered other software systems, MYOB Business AccountRight Plus won out for its value, ease of use and integrations. Because Garfish Manly already used – and liked – MYOB Payroll, Danen felt like moving to the software was “a no-brainer.”

It eliminated the need to manually enter paper invoices or data, while bank feeds allow one-click reconciliations. With all data now in a single system and accessible on a desktop or mobile app, Kristen would immediately save time inputting on multiple platforms.

“The less time we can spend on our accounts, the more time we can devote to getting the restaurant in the best running position it can be,” says Kristen.

Smoother implementation, immediate impact

With information housed in the software, the Garfish team can drill into the numbers with just a few clicks.

“We needed a more holistic overview of the business to help decision-making and the speed at which you can make those decisions,” says Danen.

The implementation was smooth and straightforward, feeling more like an expansion of their existing payroll software rather than an overhaul. Up and running in 2022, Kristen noticed an immediate difference.

“It’s very user-friendly, so Danen can jump in and have a look at any reports that he wants.”

Streamlined efficiency: the new normal

Danen wonders how he ever got through the day without MYOB AccountRight Plus.

“The time it saves is huge. If I’m in the office for the day, I’d probably save a couple of hours.”

Accurate, real-time reporting saves $40,000

Fast, easy access to business data has been a gamechanger for Danen. The restaurant’s point of sales system feeds directly into the software, which, along with up-to-date invoicing and payroll information, gives a holistic overview.

“If I look at my P&L, I can just click on a certain cost centre, and I can see all the different transactions. It’s just super quick.”

This lets Danen make better decisions about everything from menu pricing to stock ordering and weed out unnecessary spend.

“It’s saved us probably $40,000 in overhead costs.”

Cash flow under control

Improved visibility also means the restaurant is better managing its cash flow, not over or under-ordering stock, and having confidence in the numbers.

“So [Danen] is secure in knowing that we are paying the correct bills, having the right money there available to pay those bills, and making sure that everything in the system is correct,” explains Kristen.

People, not paperwork

Danen and Kristen really value the time they can now spend on what’s important.

“I love people. I’m not a desk person, I’d prefer to be interacting with customers,” says Danen. “Anytime you can save on admin is more time training the staff, more time with customers and guests, and that’s the most important thing in hospo.”
