Frequently Asked Questions

What is STP Phase 2 and why do we need it?

The expansion of STP, also known as STP Phase 2, will reduce reporting burden for employers who need to report information about their employees to multiple government agencies. It will also help Services Australia’s customers, who may be your employees, get the right payment at the right time. For more information about all the changes you will need to make in preparation please view the ATO STP Phase 2 employer reporting guidelines.

When will MYOB be ready for STP Phase 2?

MYOB is ready for you to begin your transition to STP Phase 2. There is a deferral with the ATO until the end of 2022, so make the transition now to ensure you’ll be compliant by 1 January 2023.

Which MYOB products will be STP Phase 2 compliant?

STP Phase 2 will be compatible with:

These products will not be compliant:

  • MYOB Essentials (old) – existing customers will be upgraded to the new MYOB Essentials platform and be able to transition to STP Phase 2. We have obtained an extended deferral from the ATO and you’ll have until 31 March 2023 to report your first STP Phase 2 pay run. We’ll contact you with more information prior to your MYOB Essentials upgrade.
  • MYOB AccountEdge – Support for AccountEdge has ended from 1 April 2022 and AccountEdge will not be STP Phase 2 compliant. Please contact us to discuss your migration options.

Why does my AccountRight file need to be online?

You’ll need to complete the move to STP Phase 2 online so you can integrate with the ATO’s online services. This transition is completed through MYOB AccountRight in the browser. To access this you can sign in via app.myob.com with your my.MYOB sign in details, or launch browser from within your desktop app by clicking on the Open in web browser button from the main menu screen.

Many services including the ATO, and government services are moving their systems and processes online. MYOB will continually invest in developing our software to support this.

You’ll still be able to process your payroll in AccountRight on the desktop however you will need an online file to lodge STP Phase 2 to the ATO.

If your company file is offline (saved on your computer or a network server), you’ll need to put your company file online to move to STP Phase 2. Having your file online is included in your MYOB subscription so there’s no extra cost. Once online you can take advantage of the many additional online services.

Is there STP Phase 2 training available?

We’re running STP Phase 2 webinars, along with self guided courses on MYOB Academy. Take a look at Resources & Training for more information.

Will MYOB move me to STP Phase 2 automatically?

Every business is different and there’s some information required as part of the move that only you will be able to provide. Therefore, MYOB can’t move you automatically.

There’s a handy assistant in your software that guides you through the move. If you need more help moving to STP Phase 2, we recommend speaking to an accounting advisor. Find an MYOB partner.

If you are transitioning from another software, look out for our new feature where you can simply bring across your BMS ID which will make this process of transferring your payroll data a lot easier. (HINT: Ensure your Payroll Summary figures match your End of Year Verification report under STP Payroll Reporting before opting in to STP Phase 2)

Where can I see if I have moved to STP Phase 2 in my software?

You’ll see a label showing you're reporting on STP Phase 2 in the STP reporting centre

  • In MYOB Business and Essentials go to the Payroll menu > Single Touch Payroll reporting.
  • In AccountRight, go to Payroll command centre > Payroll Reporting > Payroll Reporting Centre. This will open in the browser version of AccountRight.

Once I have completed the setup, will processing payroll change?

No. Once STP Phase 2 setup has been completed, processing a payroll and reporting for STP will remain the same as will EOFY Finalisation.

What happens if my payroll figures don’t match my STP Reporting figures?

Keep an eye out once your STP Phase 2 is live. We have a new send update event feature which will mean you do not need to do a zero dollar pay run for each employee to send YTD STP 2 data to the ATO.

Where do I find out about all the new ATO Reporting Categories (disaggregation) of wages?

Please refer to the ATO for further information on disaggregation of Wages.

What happens if I make a mistake in my pay run?

If you have filed your pay run, you will need to reverse and then complete a new pay run for the same period and refile. Please see the below help links to step you through this process-

Do we still need to lodge a Tax File Declarations once we begin STP Phase 2?

No. Once STP Phase 2 has been set up, you will no longer need to lodge TFN Declarations, however you will still need to keep a record of the form where a hard copy form is provided
