Glenn Floyd started Floyd Business Services in 2012, as a sole operator delivering tax, accounting and bookkeeping services to small businesses in New South Wales. It was a chance to step away from corporate accounting, become his own boss, and reclaim his work-life balance. He and his wife grew the business slowly, building a solid but manageable client base over almost a decade.
They have been loyal MYOB Accountants Office customers throughout, relying on the platform for everything from customer details to tax filing. While the desktop suite worked well, Glenn started looking for a cloud solution after 2020, when COVID forced workers out of the office, and the Floyds bought a caravan for cross-country road tripping.
“I have very few face-to-face meetings with clients now, because you don’t really need to,” explains Glenn. “We wanted to increase our travel, so I needed to be able to move and work remotely.”
This made him the ideal customer for MYOB’s new cloud platform – and when it launched, he was one of the first to jump on board.
“As soon as I heard that they were going online, I said, ‘Great, I can just have a laptop or tablet and work anywhere,’” says Glenn.
MYOB Practice Compliance is MYOB’s online compliance platform, designed to transition desktop MYOB users like Glenn to the cloud. The platform creates a complete, connected tax workflow, with data flowing from the client ledger to worksheets, financial statements and tax returns, all in real-time. While Glenn is a sole operator, the platform works for businesses of all shapes and sizes, making it easier for them to offer hybrid work options and retain talent on their teams.
For existing MYOB users, there’s no complex implementation or onboarding process needed to shift to Practice Compliance. Instead, users can choose to take a specific return online, then flick back to the desktop version as needed. It’s a flexible approach that lets users move at their own pace.
Glenn is taking a measured approach to transition, in line with MYOB’s progressive releases. He’s already using the platform for core functions and trialling new ones as they go live. While he’s needed help from the MYOB team a few times, he’s already looking forward to a fully-connected system.
“It’s more looking to the future,” explains Glenn, “where I can be totally online and more flexible with my movement, being comfortable without backups, and not having to worry about transporting this desktop around with me.”
Floyd Business Services is already seeing the benefits of MYOB Practice Compliance. Glenn says that the beginning and end of the tax return process are simpler, with the platform prefilling client details into tax returns and allowing quick online approvals.
“The start-to-end process — prefill, sending to the client, the interaction and seeing approvals — that’s definitely more seamless,” he says.
This saves time in his day-to-day work and gives him more flexibility, whether he’s working from home or halfway across the country. As he moves more tasks to the cloud, he’s looking forward to a system that allows smooth client service from anywhere.
“When I’m out with clients, I can have the laptop and bring up their tax returns or their accounts,” he says. “That’ll be a big function. I think we’re going to be more mobile and have everything there. It’s not, ‘I’ll check that when I get home.’ It’s, ‘Bang, there it is.’”
He’s also anticipating less reliance on in-office servers and backups, without worrying about losing data or client details. With MYOB Practice Compliance , everything syncs in the cloud, making all client data accessible and accurate through any internet connection.
Floyd Business Services was among the first to prepare and lodge tax returns in MYOB Practice Compliance, and Glenn is already noticing the benefits: time savings, connected returns, simpler client communication. and most importantly, the flexibility to work from anywhere.
Next on the list: Glenn will continue to shift new return types to the cloud as they go live, and he’s thinking about playing around with workpapers and financial statements on the platform as well. It’s all about finding more flexible, accessible ways of working, so Glenn and his wife can spend less time at work and more time on the road.
