Local business Savant Garde Productions wins MYOB ‘Big Heroes Shop Small’ $10k business grant

20 Nov 2013

MYOB congratulates Glen Waverley video production duo Oscar Axel Thorborg and Tim Evans of Savant Garde Productions for winning the second of five ‘Big Heroes Shop Small’ business makeover grants worth $10,000 each.

Thorborg and Evans graduated as film-makers from Deakin University at the end of 2012 and set-up Savant Garde Productions, a small-scale production company specialising in affordable video production services.

They said, “We had equipment from our university days and we saw a niche for a low-cost, high quality service primarily producing web video content. So we started the business 12 months ago to bridge the gap between film students and full-scale production companies - our clients are a mix of corporates and artists via word-of-mouth. We also hire Deakin University film graduates on a casual basis as required for productions. We found out about the MYOB competition from Tim’s mum and she encouraged us to enter - we’re pretty stoked to win.”

In a caption for their entry in the MYOB ‘selfie’ photo competition, Thorborg and Evans said, “Savant Garde has built up a client base and show reel. With $10k it is finally time to launch our website and upgrade our gear.” The Savant Garde Productions website is in development and they hope to launch this in the next couple of weeks, along with establishing their social media presence.

When asked about the biggest challenges in business, they said, “Spreading the word and finding new clients without a marketing budget.”

Their advice to small business owners is, “Figure out what you do well and just do it. Our motivation comes from producing content that makes people think, laugh etc.”

In support of ‘Shop Small’ (#ShopSmallAU), a national movement committed to advocating local small businesses, MYOB is running a campaign this month to give away $75,000 through these offers:

  1. A ‘Big Heroes Shop Small’ campaign, offering five business makeover grants worth $10,000 each
  2. 2. 100 prizes of $250 cash to the customers of small businesses participating in the “Shop Small” month

The first competition asks eligible business owners to tell MYOB how a makeover will help them love their work, and take a ‘Business Selfie’ (a photo that encapsulates their business) to share via social media. A winner is being announced each week during November, with the fifth prize awarded to the most popular entry. The second competition asks customers to simply fill out an entry form upon completing a transaction worth $10 or more at a participating business. 25 winners will be drawn weekly during November.

MYOB is also offering three months’ free access to MYOB Live products to non-clients who get involved with the initiative in November.

CEO Tim Reed is pleased to see the Shop Small campaign is well-received, saying, “MYOB is a passionate advocate for people who have the courage to get up and have a go at being their own boss. It takes a lot of guts, hard work and sacrifice. Let’s make November the biggest shopping month for small businesses, and continue their support through the year ahead.

“Shop Small strongly encourages you to visit your community shops, and we want it to also be about seeking out local businesses online. Figures show Australians spent more than $7 million on internet shopping at overseas stores in 2012-2013 – a significant investment that could have really benefitted local business.”
