Local business Eco Maintenance Services wins MYOB ‘Big Heroes Shop Small’ $10k business grant

14 Nov 2013

MYOB congratulates Greensborough landscaping business owner Dave Martin of Eco Maintenance Services for winning the first of five ‘Big Heroes Shop Small’ business makeover grants worth $10,000 each.

Martin established the business in 2010 when he had trouble finding work after having a heart attack at age 27.

He says, “No one really wants to give you a chance after you have a heart attack. My only option was to work for myself and try and start all over again. It’s been very tough, especially working seven days a week for the past four months. Companies like MYOB give small businesses a chance. I never thought in my wildest dreams I’d win. MYOB has made my year.”

Eco Maintenance Services offers landscape gardening, outdoors maintenance work and body corporate work. Martin will use the grant to get the good kick start he needs to expand the business and purchase a tip truck. As he said in a clever caption for his entry in the MYOB photo competition, “With $10K I could buy a tip truck so I didn't have to shovel so much dirt and really clean up this one horse town.” He’s also aiming to finish setting up his website, social media and other business tools.

When asked about the biggest challenges in business, Martin says, “The long hours, paperwork and sleepless nights but if you stick it out it really pays off. I love being outdoors and meeting and helping new people. I’m lucky to have good employees who also love to help others.”

His advice to small business owners is, “Once you come up with a good idea, just stick at it. It may seem tough and you think there’s no end to it all but it really starts to pay off after a couple of years. You start to see the light at the end of the tunnel.”

In support of ‘Shop Small’ (#ShopSmallAU), a national movement committed to advocating local small businesses, MYOB is running a campaign this month to give away $75,000 through these offers:

  1. A ‘Big Heroes Shop Small’ campaign, offering five business makeover grants worth $10,000 each
  2. 100 prizes of $250 cash to the customers of small businesses participating in the “Shop Small” month

The first competition asks eligible business owners to tell MYOB how a makeover will help them love their work, and take a ‘Business Selfie’ (a photo that encapsulates their business) to share via social media. A winner is being announced each week during November, with the fifth prize awarded to the most popular entry. The second competition asks customers to simply fill out an entry form upon completing a transaction worth $10 or more at a participating business. 25 winners will be drawn weekly during November.

MYOB is also offering three months’ free access to MYOB Live products to non-clients who get involved with the initiative in November.

CEO Tim Reed is pleased to see the Shop Small campaign is well-received, saying, “MYOB is a passionate advocate for people who have the courage to get up and have a go at being their own boss. It takes a lot of guts, hard work and sacrifice. Let’s make November the biggest shopping month for small businesses, and continue their support through the year ahead.

“Shop Small strongly encourages you to visit your community shops, and we want it to also be about seeking out local businesses online. Figures show Australians spent more than $7 million on internet shopping at overseas stores in 2012-2013 – a significant investment that could have really benefitted local business.”
