Mind your own Mo
Moustache season is open at MYOB!
Happy Movember everyone! It’s officially moustache season as we get set to get hairy here at MYOB, all in support of Movember. While it’s great fun, watching team members around our many offices groom and trim their way into the moustache hall of fame, it’s also an important event, raising vital funds and awareness for men’s health.
As ‘Mo Season’ officially kicks off, we’ve got over 100 team members across all our offices already signed up to pledge their support as ‘Mo Bros’ and ‘Mo Sistas’ (the ladies help out by pledging donations and helping seek sponsorship). And we’re not alone. Since its humble beginnings in Melbourne in 1999, Movember has spread around the world, with over 1.1 million taking part in the organised events. Last year alone, over 130,000 people took part – raising over $25 million that will be put towards changing attitudes, habits and spreading awareness of men’s health around the world.
Here at MYOB, we love supporting such worthwhile causes, and while it’s a lot of fun (we’re looking forwards to seeing some crazy mo’s around the office!), it’s also a big part of our commitment to corporate social responsibility. CEO Tim Reed sums it up perfectly:
Corporate Social Responsibility – like too many things in business – is a big phrase for a simple idea: community. We’re all part of a larger community; every business is part of one or many communities. CSR is about businesses realising this and acting like that community matters. As individuals we do it every day in our local community – we should do it at work too. It is important that companies recognise this because often they can make a difference that is positive for their community at little or no cost, or even of benefit to them. For example, acting as a good community citizen will often make a business more attractive to employees and is often fun – as is the case in supporting Movember. When the bushfires hit Victoria a few years ago, the QLD floods came last year and the earthquakes in Christchurch there was a specific need for not just community spirit but also for cash. Businesses can at those times participate in donating funds just like people – I’m proud that in each case MYOB made significant donations to these causes.
While we’re raising funds and showing our support, Movember is also doing its part to build the team spirit – this great event is inclusive and brings people together in a very visible way. It’s certainly generated plenty of conversation as staff share tales of their Mo – and even more on the MYOB Yammer network. As the month – and the mo’s – progress, we’re sure to see some pretty impressive facial hair – and I promise there will be plenty of pictures for you to giggle over on our Facebook page.
Here’s to a very hairy Movember!
