Love thy neighbours this November with “Shop Small”

With the season of giving fast approaching, we’d like you to give some love to your local businesses: the ones that know you by name, the ones that let you shop online in your pajamas past midnight, the ones that never fail to give you the best deals and the ones that serve as your suburb’s go-to meeting points.

This month, American Express, MYOB and other sponsors are putting the spotlight on small businesses with the “Shop Small” initiative. This initiative is a national movement committed to advocating local small businesses and MYOB is running a campaign to give away $75,000.

The Shop Small movement was created four years ago by American Express as a one-day event in the US, and extended its roots to Canada, UK, and now in Australia following its success. There’s a range of benefits for the small business owner and their loyal customers.

Win-win for small businesses and their customers

We are running these offers in November for Shop Small

1.       A ‘Big Heroes Shop Small’ campaign

We’re offering 5 business makeover grants worth $10,000 each. Eligible business owners need to tell MYOB how a makeover will help them love their work, and take a ‘selfie’, a photo that encapsulates their business, upload it to MYOB’s Shop Small microsite and share it via social media. There’s a winner every week in November with the final prize awarded to the most popular entry.

2.       100 x $250 cash for your customers

Customers of participating businesses in the “Shop Small” campaign simply need to fill out an entry form after completing a transaction worth $10 or more. 25 winners will be drawn weekly during November.

The Shop Small (#ShopSmallAU) message isn’t limited to bricks and mortar; it extends to online shopping as well. We are also offering three months’ free access to MYOB Live products to non-clients who get involved with the initiative in November.

Why are we doing this?

CEO Tim Reed says, “Small businesses make a major contribution to local investment, workforce development and economic growth, and many fund the livelihoods of other local people. They provide almost half of industry employment – around 5 million people – and contribute around one-third of our GDP. Yet they often don’t receive the attention they deserve. That’s why we’ve joined forces with the Shop Small movement to help make their business life easier.

“In Australia, we’re ranked in the top 10 of 183 economies in the world for starting a new business, getting credit and ease of doing business. But we’re also ranked in 12th position when it comes to business closes.

“We can slow the shutting of doors through encouragement and patronage. That’s why MYOB hopes to inspire millions of Australians to support local operators and make November the biggest small business shopping month of the year. Let’s celebrate and encourage the success of these unsung heroes.”
