Styling, success & why MYOB is like Instagram
Megan Morton is one of Australia’s best-known interior designers, she’s also a best-selling author of four books and founder of The School, a creative hub based in Sydney.
We sat down with Megan to talk and work, business and the secret of her success.
Hi, Megan. You work all over the world, you’re a best-selling author, and now head of your own creative hub. How do it all?
I have a horizontal business plan.
Which means my four businesses work out of one space. I have a photography studio space, a props business, my styling workshop and now our school - all sitting in a big beautiful white box.
You’ve previously said interior styling is making things beautiful. Where did that come from?
I grew up a country girl, and I used to love being outdoors foraging for beautiful things to collect when walking to my best friend’s place.
Which is what you still love doing today, right?
"Like many girls, I was obsessed with DOLLY."
Your first job was
with DOLLY magazine, how did that come about?
Like many teenage girls I was obsessed with DOLLY.
After finishing high school, I literally turned up at their office in Sydney and said I want to work here. I was so determined.
I started as an intern during the day and was a waitress at night – I thought it was just the best life.
And that started a career in publishing…
It was the beginning of a wonderful editorial journey through a number of publications in the ACP stable, who owned Dolly at the time.
It was such an inclusive community, and I learned a lot about true marketing…getting readers into a space where they felt totally connected to a magazine page.
It’s what’s what I’ve always tried to do in everything ever since.
"I have a desire to share beautiful things."
What made you want to become an interior stylist?
Well, magazine-trained people have an innate desire to share when we find something beautiful.
And I thought it would a skill I could scale into interiors – and thing just took off.
What would you say was your big break?
Looking back, I was at the right time at the right place.
Lifestyle magazines were very much having a moment and Australian stylists were getting a lot of work overseas.
It was just one of those really fortunate moments.
Now you’re training others to think like you.
I love what I do, but the thing that’s next for me is people.
I am a sharer. I can't help it. For years now I have wanted to formulate what I have learnt in all my time styling and share that with others.
The School is my way of doing that.
"I was at the right time at the right place."
You use MYOB to run your businesses. Why is that?
Running multiple businesses really comes down to being efficient, and for me that’s being able to be mobile.
To be able to see where I’m at gives me a great sense of power and calm.
Managing the BAS for four businesses must be a headache.
Having MYOB to take care of all my ATO requirements is an invaluable relief. To just know that’s something you don’t have to deal with is really wonderful.
You’ve said MYOB is as easy as doing your Instagram. What did you mean?
Yes. The real genius of MYOB is the receipt capture app.
I can deal with all my expenses before walking through the door at the end of the day It’s literally is the same action as Instagram.
Great! Thanks for your time Megan.
No, thank you. It's such a great time to be a creative person who's not good at accounting.
