MYOB attracts top talent with Victorian Young Achiever nominee
06 Mar 2018
Only one year out of university Jake Deakin, a designer with MYOB, is already making his mark on the Australian design industry with a nomination for the Victorian Young Achiever Awards for 2018.
Nominated in the Arts and Fashion category, this is the second time Deakin has been nominated for the award.
Embodying the entrepreneurial spirit of MYOB
“I was a curious kid, always asking “why”, Mr. Deakin said. “As I got older when I was dissatisfied with the way things were, I wanted to change them. Make things easier to use, make meaning out of something meaningless.”
At RMIT university, where Deakin graduated top of his class, he designed an asthma inhaler that took him all the way to the Australian Entrepreneur of the Year awards. Another project involved redesigning the Australian health care system in conjunction with Austin Health. This was a co-design project with patients, based on their user experiences. The thesis he wrote on this project lead to him becoming a finalist at the Victorian Design Awards.
“I had a few offers [of employment]”, Mr. Deakin said. “I was attracted to the passion, culture and people at MYOB.
“Working at MYOB’s office in Cremorne also offered the opportunity to learn off the best, master my skills and grow as a designer.”
Best of all, according to Mr. Deakin, is the ability to have a true voice in a business that’s increasingly user-centric and focusing on customers more than ever.
“The design team have a lot of influence into the vision and the strategy of the product. Mostly informed by the research we do.”
Melbourne’s tech scene thriving with growth and opportunity
With other Australian tech giants like REA and Seek joining MYOB in Cremorne, not to mention countless startups, the local tech scene is booming. Mr. Deakin’s goal is to travel to Silicon Valley and work for Google where opportunity exists to design at scale for an audience of billions.
But not for a while yet.
“I still have so much to learn from the team here, there’s no need to travel overseas yet.”
The Victorian Young Achiever Awards Gala Presentation is taking place in Melbourne on 18 May 2018.
