Local business Avid Creations wins MYOB ‘Big Heroes Shop Small’ $10k business grant

05 Dec 2013

MYOB congratulates Unley (Adelaide), husband and wife business owners David and Sophie Morrell of Avid Creations, winners of the fourth ‘Big Heroes Shop Small’ business makeover grants worth $10,000 each.

Since launching in 2002, Avid Creations has been providing services in website design, photography and in the last few years the business has expanded its offering with the launch of Rolling Ball Sculptures.

What started as a hobby with David and Sophie purchasing a welder three and a half years ago so David could design and create rolling ball sculptures has grown to be unique and sought-after product. Each sculpture comprises a series of tracks where a marble or ball travels along, through, over, under and around the sculpture.

Sophie Morrell said, “We started Avid Creations as an agency for web design solutions and photography. Ever since we introduced the rolling ball sculptures offering, the orders haven’t stopped and we now have a six month waiting list. The MYOB business grant will certainly be a great boost to our business and help us expand to meet our growing demand.”

The caption for their winning entry in the MYOB ‘Business Selfie’ photo competition, David and Sophie said, “We LOVE welding Rolling Ball Sculptures. With $10k we would LOVE a larger workshop to build more intricate and exciting sculptures!”

When asked about the biggest challenges in business, Sophie said, “Time is the biggest challenge. David’s a flight attendant and he spends his spare time creating sculptures so he’ll need to decide which of these will be full-time soon.”

A significant business highlight for Avid Creations is a recent commission to create a 1.4 metre sphere sculpture for the entrance way of a luxurious house in Melbourne. David and Sophie have this piece of advice to small business owners, “Do your research and go for it.”
